Gaza’s First All-Female Radio Station Calls For Equality

by Andrew CaringiGaza’s women are grabbing the microphone to gain a voice.Hawa Radio is Gaza’s first station by women, for women. Launched on Aug. 8, the station’s staff is exclusively made up of women, and is dedicated solely to discussing female issues.“The programs that we present focus on the Palestinian woman because we are living in a community, that is, so to speak, a masculine community, which thinks a woman’s role is to grow up, get married, raise a family and take care of the children,” said Bara Ali, one of the station’s hosts. The station broadcasts from the Bureij refugee camp, which, like much of Gaza, experiences power outages and doesn’t have a functioning sewage system. But the challenge for women here goes far beyond the camp. With these women wanting a bigger say in society, Hawa may give them the voice they need to break through.
