Australian Café Collects Man Tax To Bridge Gender Pay Gap

by Jeff DonlanHave you ever heard of a man tax?A café in Melbourne, Australia, is asking men to pay an 18 percent gender surcharge to reflect the pay gap between men and women. Studies show Australian women earn 17.7 percent less than men, which is about the same as it is in the U.S.That’s why Handsome Her Café charges men a little extra during one week each month, with the money going to a women’s charity. The surcharge is optional, but so far, no man has refused to pay it.“If people aren’t comfortable with paying it, or men don’t want to pay it, we’re not going to kick them out the door,” co-owner Alex O’Brien said. “It’s just a good opportunity to do some good.”We’ll drink to that.
