Big Ben, the bell that rings in the Elizabeth Tower, is one of London’s most audible symbols, but on August 21 it will go silent for the coming 4-or-so years.
Conservation efforts must be undertaken, and in the interest of providing workers with the safest environment possible, the chimes will not sound again until 2021.
Earlier this year, crews started working on the tower, and will soon be tackling the immense job of taking the Great Clock apart, inspecting each piece, and performing repairs as needed.
Over the coming years, London will not be entirely without Big Ben’s resounding bongs.
The BBC reports, “It will still sound for important events including New Year's Eve and Remembrance Sunday.”
