Those working to conserve artifacts from Cape Adare, a historic Antarctic exploration base, came upon a 100-year-old fruitcake not long ago.
The cake itself is described as being, “in excellent condition,” and looking and smelling “(almost) edible.”
However, the tin and the paper it was in has not fared so well over the decades.
The Antarctic Heritage Trust, the organization overseeing the preservation of the Cape Adare items, notes that both will require a fair amount of treatment.
Eventually, the fruitcake and the roughly 1,500 items taken from Cape Adare for preservation purposes will be returned.
First, work will be done to restore the buildings at the site. Those structures date back to 1899 and were the first to be built on the frozen continent.
