A Princess Cruises vessel arrived in Ketchikan, Alaska on Wednesday morning with a dead humpback whale on its bow, reports KTVA.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has confirmed it is investigating the situation, but has released few details.
It did note that, “NOAA Fisheries is coordinating to have the whale carcass towed to a nearby location suitable for a necropsy to determine the cause of death.”
Princess Cruises has released a statement as well, stating that it is “surprised and saddened” by the incident.
The cruise ship line also said, “It is unknown how or when this happened as the ship felt no impact. It is also unknown, at this time, whether the whale was alive or already deceased before becoming lodged on the bow. No whales were sighted in close proximity to the ship, by the bridge navigation team, as it sailed towards Ketchikan overnight.”
