by Anthony FalcoMore than 10,000 troops stormed the shore of Queensland, Australia, for a joint military exercise with the United States last month. The June exercise, which aimed to send a message to potential foes like China, became the largest amphibious assault for Australian troops since World War II.Known as Talisman Saber, the monthlong, biennial military exercise improved combat training and exposed participants to a wide spectrum of military capabilities and training experiences. Each exercise focuses on the planning and conduct of mid-intensity, “high end” war-fighting, most of which took place at the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area in Central Queensland. The joint drills take place every two years, but this year’s Talisman Saber has been the biggest yet, seemingly to make a point.
