Walmart has issued an apology after a racial slur spotted in a product description on its website went viral.
According to KTRK, a company spokesperson noted, “We are very sorry and appalled that this third party seller listed their item with this description on our online marketplace. It is a clear violation of our policy, and has been removed, and we are investigating the seller to determine how this could have happened.”
The controversy centers around a listing for Jagazi Natural’s full cap weaving net which, according to screenshots posted online, was described in color as “‘N-word’ brown.”
Images of the page quickly spread across social media, with activist Roxane Gay tweeting, “Oh @Walmart, why is this on your website? So far past unacceptable. Wow.”
Others were more harsh, with one person noting, “This is racist AF #BoycottWalmart. I demand that #Walmart find the person who posted this like this and fire them immediately.”
Meanwhile, another individual pointed out, “For context, amazon has the same cap listed minus a certain word.”
BET reports that “when the screenshots were originally released...Walmart immediately tried to cover up the racist description. They began by changing the title and description, but forgot to change the URL, so the fire-storm continued.”
The company that produces the weaving net issued a statement, noting, "We woke up this morning to the news that someone has used our name Jagazi to list an item."
It continues, "Please beware that we are reporting this to as many people as we can and trying to get all the listings pulled down. The real Jagazi is a 100% black company for black people. People have often used our brand name to try and sell their fake products. Please be aware. Very sorry for all the distress this has caused. We are feeling the pain here as well. Most shocking!"
