MSNBC added some pointed commentary to its broadcast of President Trump’s speech Monday promoting his administration’s “Made in America” week.
As the president was announcing the presence of his cabinet members at the event, the network’s on-screen chyron read, “White House Touts ‘Made In America' Despite Trump Family Products Being Made Overseas.”
And when Trump began talking about the program’s goals--“to provide a level playing field for American workers and for American industry”--the caption changed to “Trump: Made In America ‘Mean's It's The Best' (His Family's Products Are Mostly Made Overseas).”
Earlier in the day, MSNBC host Ali Velshi had also pointed out what he called “the irony of it all” by listing the lesser-developed countries where Trump’s branded products are made; for example, his shirts are reportedly manufactured in China, Bangladesh, Honduras, and Vietnam.
Meanwhile, CBS News noted in a recent piece that "Mr. Trump, as well as his daughter and senior adviser, Ivanka, have outsourced manufacturing of their products to countries where labor is cheaper and there are fewer regulations. Items from the Trump Home Collection, for example, are made in Turkey. Some Ivanka Trump clothes are made in China, Vietnam and Indonesia."
Axios reports that when the White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked about the issue during an off-camera briefing, “Spicer said he felt it was ‘inappropriate’ to comment on their businesses, and added that in certain cases, ‘the supply chains and scalability’ are not always available in the U.S.”
