Dozens rescued from stormy weather in southwest China

Much of southwest China has been struck by heavy rain and strong winds that have caused landslides and power cuts.
The authorities say 49 tourists who had been camping on an island off the south coast Guangdong province were rescued on Sunday as a typhoon approached.
The Ministry of Transport said the tourists belong to four camping groups who became stranded on Nanpeng island – which is normally uninhabited – as Typhoon Talas swept in. They were transferred safely to a ship and a helicopter.
Another rescue operation took place in a mountainous area of Hubei province the previous day.
Around 40 local tourists were taken to safety after becoming stranded. Roads were cut off when rocks and trees came crashing down from the mountainsides. CCTV reported that emergency services set up makeshift rope bridges over the swollen river to rescue people.
Further west in Sichuan province, strong winds brought down trees and smashed windows in tall buildings in Mianyang city, according to Chinese television. Electricity to many households was cut off.
The rainstorm also washed out several roads. A national highway connecting Sichuan to Zhejiang province in the east of the country collapsed, the authorities opening up a temporary emergency passage.
