Following the New York Times report over the weekend, President Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. is defending his meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer, while working with his father’s campaign.
Veselnitskaya, described as having ties to the Kremlin, reportedly promised to reveal harmful details about Hillary Clinton.
Trump Jr. tweeted on Monday morning, “Obviously I'm the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent...went nowhere but had to listen.”
He also spoke with the Times, saying, “After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton…It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”
Trump Jr. had told the Times just months prior that, in regards to whether he’d had meetings with Russians, “I’m sure I did. But none that were set up. None that I can think of at the moment. And certainly none that I was representing the campaign in any way.”
Reuters reports that Kremlin has denied any involvement in the meeting or knowledge of the Russian lawyer involved.
