Trump delivers speech in Warsaw ahead of G20

US President Donald Trump delivered a major speech in Warsaw, Poland, at the foot of the Warsaw Uprising Monument.

Trump is in Poland ahead of a G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, and the speech, which took place in Krasinski Square, marked his first visit to central Europe as president.

During his address Trump made reference to Chopin, citing Poland not only as the “geographic heart of Europe” and saying that “in the Polish people, we see the soul of Europe”.

The US president was joined onstage by “veterans and heroes” of the Warsaw Uprising. Addressing them and the vocal crowd that chanted his name, he said: “We salute your noble sacrifice … for Poland and for freedom.”

Trump made it clear that he was in favour of a strong Europe, saying that its strength was “a blessing to the west and the world”.

On the subject of terrorism, he said that it was his goal to strip terrorists of both their funding and networks.

Trump also had a clear message for Russia: “We urge Russia to cease its destabilising activities in Ukraine”.

He also made clear the USA’s condemnation for the Russia’s support of the Assad’s government in Syria.
