MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ on Thursday criticized President Trump for making disparaging remarks about American media and intelligence during his joint press conference with the president of Poland.
President Trump blasted CNN as “fake news” and asserted that NBC also treats him unfairly despite “the fact that I make them a fortune with the Apprentice, but they forgot that.”
He later called the reliability of U.S. intelligence into question, challenging its findings on Russian election meddling and using the erroneous Bush-era reporting of ‘weapons of mass destruction’ in Iraq to bolster his view.
Host Joe Scarborough said of the comments, “For him to attack American institutions two days after the fourth of July on foreign soil, the day before we meet America’s chief adversary, is nothing short of disgusting.”
Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, noted in regards to dealing with North Korea, “We are going to be trying to rally international support for whatever it is we do diplomatically or conceivably, militarily, based on American intelligence findings. It is just an odd time to basically be saying, ‘You can’t believe the CIA, you can’t believe the U.S. intelligence community about Russia or about Iraq.’ This is an odd way to tee up international support.”
Trump’s comments didn’t go unnoticed by CNN, either.
Jim Acosta tweeted, “Isn't it a 'fake news conference' to take a question from a reporter who is essentially an ally of the White House?”
Not long after he added, “One of the questions came from a reporter who acknowledged he had just talked to WH about a job last month,” and provided a link to an article in the Hill outlining that reporter’s efforts to join the Trump administration.
