US, South Korea Test Ballistic Missiles After North Korea ICBM Launch

The US and South Korea conducted a joint missile drill on Wednesday, July 5, in response to North Korea’s long-range missile test the day before. The US’s Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, and South Korea’s Hyunmoo Missile II were deployed in the exercise, which saw missiles fired into the East Sea. The drill was meant to “show our precision fire capability,” according to a Pentagon spokesman, quoted by CNN.Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement on Tuesday that North Korea’s test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, “represents a new escalation of the threat to the United States, our allies and partners, the region, and the world.” He said the US seeks only peaceful denuclearization in the region and will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea.
