Gaza Cat Breaks Through Barriers

by Jeff DonlanSonia, the cat from Gaza, has a unique story of building bridges between Israelis and Palestinians. While living in Gaza, Sonia broke her jaw and was unable to eat. Veterinarians are difficult to find in Palestinian communities and the complex surgery she required could only be found in Israel. However, controversial regulations limit crossings for both people and pets except in certain circumstances for medical aid. That’s when Palestinian and Israeli animal groups coordinated to get Sonia the surgery she needed. Animal rights groups on both sides created a campaign and petitioned Israeli authorities, who eventually granted Sonia a permit to travel. Not only did this cat get the life-saving surgery, but she proved that love for pets can bridge differences.
