A reporter is attracting attention for calling out the Trump administration’s “bullying” of the media.
Brian Karem, who writes for the Sentinel newspapers and Playboy, appeared on MSNBC’s 'Morning Joe' Wednesday to explain the tense exchange he had with White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at a press briefing the day before.
As he told co-host Willie Geist, “That was the first...on-camera briefing in...more than a week, and she took the opportunity--first thing off the bat--to go after the media.”
Karem continued, “We’ve been called ‘the enemy of the people’ from that White House, we’ve been told that we’re ‘fake news.’ We are bullied and browbeaten every day, and I pretty much have had enough of it.”
He added, “We can’t take the bullying anymore.”
The exchange with Sanders occurred after she used a question about a retracted CNN story to blast the network and the media, saying, “there are multiple other instances where that outlet that you referenced has been repeatedly wrong and had to point that out or be corrected.”
She added, “I think that we have gone to a place where if the media can’t be trusted to report the news, then that’s a dangerous place for America.”
Sanders continued her attack, saying, “If we make the slightest mistake, the slightest word is off, it is just an absolute tirade from a lot of people in this room. But news outlets get to go on day after day and cite unnamed sources, use stories without sources...”
Karem then interrupted and said, “Sarah...come on. You’re inflaming everybody right here and right now with those words.”
He argued, “We’re here to ask you questions, you’re here to provide the answers, and what you just did is inflammatory to people all over the country who look at it and say, see, once again, the President is right and everybody else out here is fake media.  And everybody in this room is only trying to do their job.”
