The New York Times has released a comprehensive list of the "outright lies" it claims President Trump has told in order to show that “he is trying to create an atmosphere in which reality is irrelevant.”
The first one is dated January 21--his first full day in office--with a quote where he said, “I wasn't a fan of Iraq. I didn't want to go into Iraq.”
The newspaper points out, “He was for an invasion before he was against it.”
The lengthy list ends on June 21, with Trump commenting, "Right now, we are one of the highest-taxed nations in the world.”
According to the Times, “We're not.”
The media outlet goes on to state that, based on the standards it set for the assessment, the president “said something untrue, in public, every day for the first 40 days of his presidency. The streak didn’t end until March 1."
The Times isn’t the first media outlet to call Trump out for being less than truthful; the Washington Post maintains what it calls an “ongoing database of the false and misleading claims made by President Trump during his first 365 days in office.”
The Post says that, as of his first 151 days as president, he has racked up 669 such claims, many of which appear to involve health care.
Meanwhile, the watchdog group PolitiFact also keeps a running list of Trump’s statements that it has deemed to be false.
According to its scorecard, 69 percent of the president’s remarks have fallen in the categories of mostly false, false, or pants on fire.
In terms of an explanation behind his behavior, a Politico report from earlier this year stated, “Those who have followed Trump’s career say his lying isn’t just a tactic, but an ingrained habit.”
Meanwhile, the White House has denied that he lies; after former FBI Director James Comey testified that Trump had not told the truth on multiple occasions, communications official Sarah Sanders declared, “I can definitely say the president is not a liar. And, I think it’s, frankly, insulting that that question would be asked.”
