Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a restoration of bilateral ties in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, meeting for the first time since the suspension of diplomatic relations between two countries. Putin: "I know that I was among the first ones to call you and to express my support in coping with the political crisis related to the coup attempt."

Putin: "And I want to express my hope for the Turkish people to manage this problem under your leadership. I hope that law and order will be restored."

Erdogan: "Your call just after the coup attempt cheered me, my colleagues and our people."

Erdogan: "Our people showed that they are against any coup attempts and that they want democracy when they organised the rally."
