Malnourished Mosul Babies Treated at MSF Medical Center in Qayyarah
  • 7 years ago
Amid an influx of displaced civilians fleeing Mosul, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) recently opened an inpatient therapeutic feeding center (ITFC) for babies suffering from malnutrition in Qayyarah, located 35 miles south of Mosul.MSF workers at the facility, opened in December 2016, said the majority of babies being treated are less than six months old, and their families all recently fled Islamic State-controlled areas of western Mosul and Sharqat.MSF field staff reported that many mothers were unable to provide adequate nourishment to their babies due to lack of food, water and stress endured during their flight from the city. A recent report issued by the International Committee of the Red Cross said over 300,000 Mosul residents have been displaced in recent months, dramatically heightening the humanitarian crisis.
