'Radicalised' Australian Man Arrested for Trying to Travel to Syria, Faces Life Imprisonment

A 22-year-old man man was intercepted and arrested by counter-terrorism police on June 15 for allegedly trying to travel to Syria to fight for the Islamic State, an offence that carries a maximum life sentence.Australian media, including News Corp and ABC Australia, named the suspect as Moudasser Taleb, an Australian-born man who was living in the south-west suburb of Panania.Deputy NSW Police Comissioner David Hudson told reporters on Thursday that Taleb’s arrest was a result of a five-month-long investigation. The 22-year-old was reportedly radicalised through online communications, including “people overseas”, and “then made the decision to travel overseas and fight with Islamic State.” He said the suspect would be charged with foreign incursion offences.Taleb had not purchased a ticket at the time he was arrested.
