The New York Times expanding comment section with Google's AI
  • 7 years ago
The New York Times has decided to expand its comment section using Google's new Perspective API which is designed to monitor and fight internet trolls. The technology was developed by Jigsaw, a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company. Prior to rolling out this new tech, the Times used 14 human moderators to sift through 10,000+ comments everyday, meaning they only allowed comments on 10 percent of their articles. The Times has said that the new technology, which is trained to recognize bad language/comments, can enable users to comment on 25 percent of articles right away. It's become too easy for trolls to dominate conversations online. People are either leaving the conversation entirely or comments sections are being shut down. The power of machine learning offers us an opportunity to tip the scales and reverse this trend,
