Maryland and D.C. are suing Trump over Emoluments Clause
  • 7 years ago
Maryland and the District of Columbia officially filed a lawsuit against President Trump on Monday, alleging that he is in violation of the Emoluments Clause. The Emoluments Clause, which can be found in the Constitution, states the following: No Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State. The lawsuit states that because Trump has retained ownership of his billion dollar company, he is routinely involved with "foreign and domestic government actors," which puts him in violation of the clause. "Never before has a President acted with such disregard for this constitutional prescription.”
