Hillary Clinton has tried to explain President Trump’s behavior by calling him “an equal opportunity insulter.”
She made the comment at the recent Code Conference after an audience member asked her, in reference to Trump, “What do you know about him that we don’t, and how do you explain his bizarre behavior and appeal?”
After Clinton joked about attending Trump’s third wedding, which the person had mentioned, and denying they were ever social friends, she said, “The behavior that we are now seeing was always present, but it was sort of subordinated to real estate interests…”
Clinton continued, in part, “He started attacking Ronald Reagan in 1988…So he’s been an equal opportunity insulter going back many years.”
However, she then admitted that Trump “does have a visceral grasp of America’s political underbelly. He really understands how to inflame people, how to motivate them, how to bond with them…Whatever resentment or point of anger that you may have, if he can get into it, whether it’s race or sex or xenophobia...whatever it is. And so we’re seeing it on a broader stage.”
The same day, Trump responded to Clinton’s comments with a critical tweet in which he wrote, “Crooked Hillary Clinton now blames everybody but herself, refuses to say she was a terrible candidate. Hits Facebook & even Dems & DNC.”
He was referring to an earlier remark during the event when she said, “I take responsibility for every decision I made, but that's not why I lost.”
She continued to maintain that she lost the election due to Russia’s interference and former FBI director James Comey’s renewed look into her emails, among other factors.
