At least 12 dogs in Florida have tested positive for a disease called the ‘dog flu.’ Here are four facts you should know about this virus before it spreads further. What is dog flu? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s a strain of the flu virus (H3N2) that causes respiratory illness in dogs. What are the symptoms? Dogs with the flu can develop a range of symptoms, from sneezing and a runny nose to something more serious like pneumonia. Can it be cured? Dogs can recover from the dog flu within a few weeks, however, dogs who experience symptoms longer than that should receive veterinary care. Can it spread to humans? The CDC said there is no evidence that the flu can spread to people, but there is the possibility that the virus could mutate in a way to infect humans.
