According to NPR, based on the Federal Election Commission records, “129 people have already filed to run for president in 2020, as of Friday afternoon.”
One of them is Trump himself who notably filed his intention to run for re-election the day of his inauguration, notes The Independent.
The media outlet points out the paperwork ensures that he is compliant with Federal Election Commission guidelines and means that he can begin accruing campaign contributions immediately and throughout his first term.
While other high-profile 2020 hopefuls have yet to announce their intentions, there is speculation that Democrats will be running in a crowded field, notes The Hill.
As Democratic campaign veteran Erik Smith explained to Politico in February, “There are so many candidates who have held back over the last 10 years. A lot of them didn’t get into the race because Hillary Clinton was running in 2007, and then a lot stayed out in 2016 because she ran again, so you have a whole generation that’s been waiting in the wings for years.”
Among the top rumored contenders are U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts in addition to Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey.
The names of wealthy non-politicians are also being floated including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban, and Starbucks’ former CEO Howard Schultz.
