SAN DIEGO — Two San Diego police officers shot and killed a 15-year-old boy who brandished a BB gun at them on early Saturday.

According to a statement released by the San Diego Police Department, the shooting took place after the department received a 911 call asking police to check on a boy standing in front of Torrey Pines High School just before 3:30 am on Saturday. The caller stated that the boy was not armed.

Officers said they saw the boy as they pulled up to the school’s front parking lot. After the officers exited their vehicles, the boy pulled out a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. The teen reportedly refused orders to drop the weapon and continued advancing toward the policemen. Both officers opened fire, killing the teen.

The officers say they did not know the boy was brandishing a BB gun instead of a real weapon.

Police say they believe the 911 caller was the boy himself and that he had involved the officers in a suicide plot. Officials say both officers had activated their body cams at the time, and investigators will review the footage.
