US police officer indicted for assaulting Indian national

A US police officer, accused of using excessive force against a 57-year-old Indian leaving him partially paralysed, has been indicted on federal civil rights violation charges that may result in imprisonment up to 10 years. The victim, Sureshbhai Patel was partially paralysed and had to spend several weeks in the hospital. The Madison police initially suggested that Patel resisted questioning when the officers arrived. But following a review of the incident by its Office of Professional Standards, it concluded that the actions of Officer Parker "did not meet the high standards and expectations of the Madison City Police Department.” Alabama Governor Robert Bentley had apologised to the Indian government for the treatment of Patel, calling it a case of excessive use of force.
