The daughter of Senator John McCain made the comment on Fox News' 'Outnumbered' during a discussion on Clinton’s recent statements that she lost the 2016 election due, in large part, to interference by FBI Director James Comey and Russia.
McCain told the hosts on Thursday, “I come at this from a personal place...I have been there on election night, front and center, when you lose and you lose in an embarrassing way to a phenomenon, which is what happened with my father and what happened with Donald Trump.”
In 2008, her father lost to Barack Obama whom the New York Times called at the time “an opponent who was nothing short of a phenomenon.”
McCain added, “Had my father been going on TV 100 days later blaming everyone else...I probably would have personally yanked him off television and said, ‘You’re embarrassing yourself, this is pathetic, and most importantly, this is not good for America.’”
McCain eventually said about Clinton, “I find her behavior deeply unpatriotic and quite pathetic.”
Just two days earlier, Clinton had appeared in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour who asked about the surprising election outcome.
While the former first lady took responsibility for her loss, she also said, “It wasn’t a perfect campaign. There is no such thing. But I was on the way to winning until the combination of Jim Comey’s letter on October 28 and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me but got scared off.”
Clinton also said that “If the election had been on October 27, I would be your president.”
