WYLIE BAY, AUSTRALIA — A 17-year-old surfer was killed by a shark off the coast of Western Australia on Monday.

The attack took place at a popular surfing spot called Kelp Beds in Wylie Bay. This coastline is reportedly known for great white shark sightings.

The girl was surfing with her father on Monday afternoon while her mother and two sisters were watching from the shore when she was attacked, 7 News reported.

The girl’s leg was badly mauled by the shark and she was rushed to Esperance hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Shark attacks are not uncommon in Australia. Last June, Doreen Collyer, 60, died after being attacked by a shark while diving one kilometre off the Perth coast.
