Niche, a website devoted to gathering and assessing information about cities’ livability, has released its 2017 list of the best places in America to call home.
Factors considered in compiling the rankings include higher education rates, costs of living, housing, and diversity.
Crime statistics, available amenities, and employment opportunities were also parts of the equation.
Earning the top spot this year is Ann Arbor, Michigan, which earned an A+ overall grade.
It was particularly strong in the categories of public schools, family friendliness, and nightlife.
2nd place goes to Naperville, Illinois. While the suburb proved competitive with Ann Arbor in a number of categories, it faltered a bit on cost of living.
Notably, neither of the top 2 cities got high marks for weather.
Slots 3 through 5 go to Arlington, Virginia; Columbia, Maryland; and Berkeley, California, respectively. The Woodlands and Plano, both in Texas, take 6th and 7th, in that order. Rounding out the top 10 are Overland Park, Kansas; Boulder, Colorado; and Irvine, California.
Niche researched and ranked a total of 228 U.S. cities using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, FBI, CDC, and other resources.
