After Kim was poisoned at an airport in Kuala Lumpur by two women, tensions between the two countries began to rise. Following the assassination, North Korea kept four Malaysian diplomats and five of their family members from leaving the country’s capital of Pyongyang, After long deliberations, the countries finally came to an agreement where Malaysia will return Kim Jong-Nam’s body to North Korea in return for the nine detainees safely back to their home country.
