Selena Gomez Produces Powerful New Series Examining Social Media Bullying
  • 7 years ago
Selena Gomez has reached the top of the social media ladder, but she has some warning signs for those seeking Internet fame.

The actress is trying to become involved with more important projects, executively producing the upcoming Netflix series "Thirteen Reasons Why.” The relevant new show tells the story of a young high school student who commits suicide and leaves behind videos blaming 13 people that pushed her to take her own life.

With millions of followers, Selena can't escape people trying to tear her down too.

Selena tells the New York Times that she "went to the biggest high school in the world, which is the Disney Channel," and she's dealt with trolls since social media caught fire.

She tells the Times that she now has an assistant manage her Instagram because she "can't avoid" online bullying. She says, "I delete the app from my phone once a week... You fixate on the negative ones. They're not like 'you're ugly,' it's like they want to cut out your soul."

Selena knows that no matter how successful you are, even when strangers target your insecurities it can still hurt.
