EU court: Employers can legally ban headscarf
  • 7 years ago
The European Union's highest court just ruled in its first decision on the topic of women wearing headscarves at work. Employers can now legally ban staff from wearing visible religious symbols, such as the hijab worn by Muslim women. However, customers cannot demand that employees remove headscarves or other religious symbols if the company does not have a policy banning them. The European Court of Justice's decision comes after a receptionist was fired for wearing a headscarf to work in Belgium. Austria and Bavaria recently banned full-face veils in public spaces.
