The media in Russia may be showing signs of turning against the Trump administration.
Politico points to recent headlines by Kremlin-backed news outlets publicizing problems in the U.S.; for example, on March 3, the English-language media site RT featured a piece titled, “Sessions Scandal: ‘U.S Headed to Constitutional Crisis.’”
Meanwhile, Vanity Fair notes that Trump had been mentioned more 200,000 times in Russian media in January, but those numbers began to dip the following month and the tone shifted from generally positive to more negative.
During this downturn, Russian publications have reportedly published critical pieces about the Trump administration in relation to NATO and trust between the two countries.
As the Politico report states, “It’s not that the Kremlin-controlled outlets which all but explicitly rooted for Trump to defeat Hillary Clinton last fall have changed their view of the New York mogul. It’s that Moscow’s main goal was always to undermine the U.S. political system, regardless of who is in the White House, experts said.”
It also adds that the country’s media can provide a window into Putin’s position on the U.S.
Despite this speculation, on February 17, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian government, denied that local media outlets had been told to report less positively about Trump.
