Why are pandas black and white?

Researchers have always been intrigued by the appearance of pandas, which make them unique from many other mammals. A California research team analyzed individual parts of a panda's body to understand the purpose of the white and black spots. Their findings lead them to believe that the white spots act as camouflage in snowy climates and the black ones are for forests. As for the black on their eyes and ears, those regions help ward off competitors and seek out friends. Also, unlike their bear cousins, pandas don't hibernate so the mix of color helps them regulate their body temperature.
