Scientists claim to have discovered the remains of microorganisms that could be the oldest microfossils ever found. They were found in the Nuvvuagittuq Supracrustal Belt in Quebec, Canada in quartz layers. According to the University College London, the microfossils contain tiny filaments and tubes formed by bacteria that lived on iron. Dominic Papineau, the study's lead author, says these microorganisms can breathe and eat, and could be up to 4.28 billion years old.
