Barcelona, Mar 1 (EFE).- Barcelona coach Luis Enrique on Wednesday evening announced that he will not renew his contract with the Spanish soccer club at the end of the current season because he needs to rest, adding that his decision comes after much thought.

The coach of the Catalan team for the past three seasons ended a press conference at Camp Nou after the 6-1 win over Sporting by making the surprise announcement of his farewell and thanking Barcelona for the chance it had given him to helm one of Spain's premier squads.

"It's a very well-pondered ... idea. I'm faithful to my way of thinking," said Luis Enrique Martinez.

During his three-year stint as coach of the squad, he has led the team to eight titles, including two La Liga championships, one Champions League and two Copas del Rey.

"I want to end this press conference in a special way. Today, I announce to all of you that I will not be Barcelona's coach next season," he remarked, going on to say that had told the club's sports director, Albert Soler, and coaching secretary Robert Fernandez that he will not renew his contract, which expires on June 30.

"It's a difficult decision, but well-pondered. I'm clear on it. I'm announcing it. I need to rest," he said, adding that nothing will change over the coming three months of play, during which he will seek to secure the three titles for which Barcelona is in the running.
