Official: Russian airstrike hit site near US forces in Syria

Russian air forces struck a site nearby U.S. troops in Syria on Tuesday in their battle against the Islamic State in the area. Russian mistakenly began bombing what they believed to be ISIS militants in Syria, U.S. Lt. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend said. The airstrikes allegedly hit the U.S.-backed Syrian Arab Coalition by accident instead. “It’s a very complicated battlefield situation. Essentially three armies have all converged within same grid square. It’s very difficult and complicated," Townsend told reporters during a teleconference from Baghdad. Russia denied the incident, saying forces avoided the area.
