The Story Behind the Giant Kanye West Oscar Statue

Yeezus Christ.

Check out this gold sculpture of Kanye West on Hollywood Boulevard before its exhibition at Anesthesia: The Art of Exhibition.

It’s done by the artist Plastic Jesus and it stands over seven feet tall with a platform sign reading: False Idol.

With its arms akimbo, nails through the palms, gold-painted body, and a medallion around its face, while branding a pair of Yeezy shoes, it was a conversation piece aimed to point out that the domain in society and culture that Kanye fills is far greater than his output.

When speaking of his past work, Plastic Jesus says he’s trying to call attention to the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry. But with this latest statue, he is chosing to examine the cult of fame.

According to a press release, the statue was erected under the watchful eye of two security guards and caused no confrontations. And after just a few hours on display, the place was packed.
