The future of Michael Flynn’s career hangs in the balance following revelations that he allegedly engaged in premature discussions with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
People familiar with the situation recently told the Washington Post that at least one of Flynn’s pre-Trump inauguration conversations with Kislyak included talk of easing U.S. sanctions against Russia.
Broaching such a topic prior to the official transfer of power is possibly a violation of the law.
The Wall Street Journal notes that according to a White House official, Flynn has since apologized to his associates, but his continuing role as Trump’s national security adviser is a matter that is under review.
On Friday as news of Flynn’s conversations spread, President Trump told reporters on board Air Force One that he had no knowledge of the situation.
He has remained publicly silent on the issue.
Some close to the president told the Wall Street Journal that Trump has privately indicated he would like to “keep moving forward” with Flynn.
