NEW YORK — The wife of a New York doorman is mourning his tragic and sudden death, just a week before the couple’s 37th wedding anniversary.

The New York Daily News reports that around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Miguel Gonzalez was shovelling snow outside a building on the Upper East Side. Gonzalez has been standing near the top step of a short flight of stairs when he suddenly slipped.

The 59-year-old fell down the stairs and crashed head-first through a plate glass window beside the main door.

Sharp glass cut his face and left a gash in his jugular. Gonzales insisted to his horrified colleagues that he was OK, but blood began pouring from the gaping wound in his throat.

He was rushed to the hospital, but died a short while later.

Gonzales was a proud Puerto Rican and had been planning to retire back home in two years. His death is the first snow-related casualty reported after a winter blast hit the U.S. Northeast on Thursday.
