Bison Are Back In Canadian National Park After 140 Year Absence

by Jeff DonlanA herd of bison was reintroduced to a part of Canada where they have not been in 140 years. The 16 bison were released in the country’s oldest national park in Banff, Alberta. Helicopters flew the bison to the area, since it is not accessible by road. Ten pregnant female bison and six bulls were radio collared before being released. They will stay under observation in an enclosed pasture until the summer of 2018. After that, they will be released into the full 460-square-mile park. Bison were hunted to near-extinction during the 19th century. This reintroduction will restore the missing role bison play in Banff’s ecosystem.
