Army to allow the completion of the highly contested Dakota Access pipeline
  • 7 years ago
The Army Wednesday said they will allow the developed of the Dakota Access oil pipeline to lay pipe under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota, clearing the way for completion of the disputed $3.8 billion project.
The Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which is concerned a pipeline leak could contaminate their drinking water, has pledged to challenge the Army's ruling in court.
This final phase of the four-state crude oil pipeline has been the focus of massive protests in recent months. The last section of the 1,172-mile pipeline to be built will run under North Dakota’s Lake Oahe, just upstream of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation and carry North Dakota oil through the Dakotas and Iowa to a shipping point in Illinois.
