Troops drafted to end Brazilian crime surge as police strike

Brazilian soldiers have arrived in Espírito Santo to bring law and order to the small coastal state just north of Rio de Janeiro.
A police strike over pay has seen a surge in violent crime and looting.

The dispute, a result of a state budget shortfall,is indicative of a country in deep recession.
Health services, education, the justice and prison system are in chaos due to a lack of money.

The crime surge in Espírito Santo has seen as many as 75 people killed since February 3.
Brazil’s President Michel Temer ordered the 200 troops into the region to quell the spiralling unrest.
