La La Land wins another top award as director Damien Chazelle criticises Donald Trump

There is no stopping hit musical La La Land.
The film’s director Damien Chazelle collected the gong for best feature film at the Directors Guild of America Awards.
At 32, he is the youngest director ever to do so.
Chazelle used the ceremony to defend global film-making, praising Iranian cinema and critizising US president Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban.
He told reporters: “As soon as we get into a business of excluding filmmakers or voices because they’re from parts of the world that we decide are somehow not useful for us any more.
“I mean, it’s such a dangerous slippery slope but it’s also so inherently anti-art.
“I mean, I can’t think of anything more counter to the basic premise of what art should be.”

Australia’s Garth Davis took home the First-Time Director Award for his heart-warming family film Lion.
The film tells the true story of an Indian man who uses Google Earth to rediscover his home town and track down his birth family.
While at the age of 79, veteran director Ridley Scott was honoured with a Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award for his long contribution to cinema.
