QUEBEC CITY — Canadian authorities are investigating a 27-year-old French-Canadian university student as the sole suspect in the attack at a mosque in Quebec City on Sunday night.

The lone suspect is believed to be Alexandre Bissonnette, a political science student at Université Laval in Quebec, local media reported.

According to CBC News, Bissonnette allegedly opened fire on the ground floor of the Islamic Cultural Center, where male muslims were praying. Women and children were upstairs at the cultural center.

Bissonnette reportedly fled the scene in his car but later then called 911 to surrender. He was then allegedly arrested near his vehicle which was parked on the bridge of Île d'Orléans, Le Soleil reported.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been released but Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has concluded the attack as an act of terrorism.
