Washington leads global anti-Trump protests

Hundreds of thousands of activists have protested across the US following the inauguration of the country’s new president Donald Trump.
In the capital Washington DC, more than half a million people turned out against the new administration as part of the ‘‘Women’s March on Washington’‘.
Large-scale rallies also took place in other US cities, including Chicago, Boston, New York and Los Angeles.
Organisers said people had come to highlight issues such as women’s rights, nuclear weapons, climate change and immigration.
Addressing activists US film director Michael Moore said: “So I woke up this morning and I picked up the Washington Post. And the headline read ‘Trump takes power.’ I don’t think so. Here’s the power. Here’s the majority of America, right. We are the majority. New President vows to end ‘American carnage.’ Mr. Trump, we are here to vow to end the Trump carnage.”
The protests in the US came as hundreds of so called ‘‘sister marches’‘ took place worldwide in a global day of protest against the new president.
