Donald Trump continues to fire back at Rep. John Lewis who questioned the legitimacy of his forthcoming presidency and asserted that he won't be attending Trump's inauguration.
Trump tweeted on Tuesday, “John Lewis said about my inauguration, 'It will be the first one that I've missed.' WRONG (or lie)! He boycotted Bush 43 also because 'he thought it would be hypocritical to attend Bush's swearing-in [because] he doesn't believe Bush is the true elected president.' Sound familiar! WP."
The quote was pulled from a piece published in the Washington Post on January 21, 2001.
The president-elect made similar comments about Lewis in an interview with Fox News that aired Wednesday, saying, “...I think he just grandstanded...and then he got caught in a very bad lie.”
Trump is also quoted as saying, “He conveniently doesn't remember. How do you forget if you go to an inauguration? I can tell you when I was at the inaugurations and you don't forget something like that. So he got caught and it's pretty bad.”
The controversy began when Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia, said in a recent NBC News interview, “I don't plan to attend the inauguration. It will be the first one that I miss since I've been in Congress. You cannot be at home with something that you feel is wrong.”
Lewis also said, “I don't see this president-elect as a legitimate president...I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”
