Jurors deliver death penalty verdict in Dylann Roof case

A group of 12 federal jurors recommended the death penalty for Dylann Roof, the man who killed nine people in a 2015 massacre at a historically black Charleston, South Carolina, church. Judge Richard Gergel will formally sentence Roof on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET. The jury deliberated for less than three hours. In his closing argument, Roof suggested that arguing for a life sentence wasn't worth the effort. It'll likely be years before Roof is put to death as the federal government has put executions on hold out of concerns about lethal injection drugs. He also faces a second trial, by the state of South Carolina, where he faces the death penalty as well.
