Trump Targets Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel In Tweet

On Monday morning, President-elect Donald Trump tweeted about Chicago’s “record setting” murder rate, also stating that “....if Mayor can't do it he must ask for Federal help!”

Donald Trump is once again speaking out about the high crime rate in Chicago.
On Monday morning, the president-elect tweeted, “Chicago murder rate is record setting - 4,331 shooting victims with 762 murders in 2016. If Mayor [Rahm Emanuel] can't do it he must ask for Federal help!”
Just the day before, WLS reported that the Chicago Police Department had released its crime data for the year which includes “762 murders, 3,550 shooting incidents and 4,331 shooting victims.”
The piece calls this Chicago’s “worst violence in nearly 20 years.”
WLS notes that Eddie Johnson, the department's superintendent, attributed the spike in gun-related crimes to “criminals emboldened by the current anti-police climate nationwide.”
Trump’s latest tweet is not his first reference to Chicago’s rise in violence.
According to the Chicago Tribune, during a July rally, the then-candidate is quoted as saying, “Since President Obama became president, almost 5,000 killings in Chicago and nobody talks about it. Well, we're going to start talking about it.”
Then months later, Trump said at a debate, “In Chicago, they've had thousands of shootings, thousands since Jan. 1. Thousands of shootings.”
