Bollywood's Most Iconic Mothers Ft. Nargis, Nirupa Roy, Raakhee, Kirron Kher, Jaya Bachchan

Though they aren't the leading ladies, they surely are the very foundation on which our Bollywood films stand, yes we are talking about the onscreen Bollywood mums who have always had a pivotal role to play in the films. And on the occasion of mothers day Movie talkies bring you the actresses who've adorned Bollywood's mommy bandwagon.



1. Nirupa Roy: Nirupa Roy is definitely the mother of all Bollywood 'maas'. The 'mere paas maa hai' dialogue from the blockbuster hit 'Deewar' placed her on the throne of 'Filmy Maas' and her favourite onscreen son was none other than the megastar Amitabh Bachchan. She has played mother to Bachchan in films like 'Amar Akbar Anthony', 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar', 'Suhaag', 'Mard' and 'Lal Badshah'.

2. Durga Khote: Durga Khote was lauded for her portrayal of Jodha Bai, a queen torn between duty towards her husband and love towards her son in 'Mughal-e-Azam'. Post that, she played mother to many Bollywood stars in films like 'Karz', 'Anand', 'Namak Haraam', 'Anupama' and many others. Khote breathed her last on September 22, 1991.

3. Lalita Pawar: Amongst all the other ideal mothers, there was one who carved a niche for herself by spitting venom. Lalita Pawar by far is the most iconic negative mother of the Indian film industry. Though she started her career as a child artist and then the protagonist, an accident on the sets paralyzed her face and from there on, she went on to play character roles. She is remembered for her roles in films like 'Dahej', 'Sasural', 'Hum Dono', 'Grahasti', and 'Khandaan' to name a few. 4. Nargis: 'Mother India' Nargis immortalized the struggling, sacrificing Indian woman, who gives up everything to bring up her sons. But before you think this woman is weak, let us enlighten you that the woman is strong enough to kill her criminal son.

5. Raakhee: Raakhee raised everyone's eyebrows when she agreed to play mother to Amitabh Bachchan, when she was at the peak of her career. She had delivered many hits opposite Bachchan but she took everyone by surprise when she played mother to Big B in 'Shakti' and after that in 'Laawaris' and post that, she became the most sought after on-screen mom . Towards mid 80's and 90's, she played the elderly mother—usually a bereaved and bitter widow, in films such as 'Ram Lakhan', 'Baazigar', 'Khalnayak', 'Karan Arjun' 'Border', 'Soldier' and 'Dil Ka Rishta', to name a few.


6. Jaya Bachchan: If there is a darling mother, then it's Jaya Bachchan. Jaya, who quit acting post 'Silsila' returned to the silver screen after a long hiatus as 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa'. Post that, she played mother to many modern day actors in films like 'Fiza', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...', 'Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche', 'Kal Ho Na Ho', 'Laga Chunari Mein Daag' and 'Drona'.

7. Farida Jalal: Though she failed to make a mark as the female lead in Hindi films, Farida Jalal grabbed eyeballs with her portrayal of the filmy 'Maa'. She played mother to many an actor, from Shah Rukh Khan to Kajol. 10. Kirron Kher: Kirron Kher surely is the most cherished mom of the current day and age. Her cheery demeanor and great acting skills have made her the present times most sought-after mother. Her roles in films like 'Rang De Basanti', 'Main Hoon Na', 'Devdas', 'Fanaa', 'Action Replayy', 'Dostana', 'Singh Is Kinng', 'Om Shanti Om', 'Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna' and 'Veer Zara', to name a few, were lauded by all and sundry.
